Remembering Betty Cannon

Betty Cannon who passed away in the early hours of 23 December 2012 will be sadly missed as a long time supporter of Mytchett Athletic Football Club.

Although Betty’s time at the club predates most of the current members, when you read of her devotion and commitment over many years, you can appreciate and respect the efforts that form part of the club’s legacy.

One person who remembers the contribution Betty and her husband Bill made to Mytchett Athletic is Vice President, Norman Hennah, who wrote these words.

Bill joined Mytchett FC in the early 70s when his son started to play football with the club.

Very soon both Bill and Betty became supporters of the club giving a great deal of their time.

Bill became a team Manager moving on to become Club Manager and Club Chairman.

Betty not to be out done joined the Supporters Association, giving her time and the family time to raising funds for the club.

They both also gave their time in helping with the visits of the Dutch club S.V. Argon which went from 1978 till 2005.

Boxing day in the early 70s was the Club Day where we got the whole club together just to have some fun. It started in the Hall by the Water Works – there was a 5-a-side and a tea party, so not much room in the Hall! Plus there was the drawing of the old Christmas raffle, one of the club’s main fund raisers at the time along with the End of Season Dance at the Camberley Civic Centre.

These events could not have been held without the work done by Betty and Bill.

Then we moved on to Bellew Road in 1975 where Betty became a member of the Ladies Team to play the Managers Team between 1975 and 1982. Bill was one of the team who did a lot of work to get the clubhouse opened.

We have lost a true friend of the club who will be sadly missed and our thoughts go out to Bill and the family.
